A prosthesis is a device intended to replace a missing or partially intact body part or severely damaged organ or to fulfill its original function. Internal prostheses An internal prosthesis is a device intended to replace a missing, damaged or partially missing joint or bone, usually, but not confined to, the hip or knee. External prostheses An external prosthesis is a device intended to replace a missing or partially missing limb segment. Mammary prostheses Mammary prostheses are used following an ablation or partial ablation of the breast to compensate for the volume and the weight of the breast in order to restore good harmony and balance between the two breasts. They can be worn in a well-fitting wired bra (external breast prosthesis). As a general rule, a mammary prosthesis consists of a gel of silicone. This type of prosthesis restores the balance of the torso. |
